A flurry of pharmaceutically related events activity has taken place at Spain’s Barcelona International Convention Centre (CCIB) recently.

The venue has hosted three of the main international conferences in the medical and pharmaceutical sector, attracting almost 10,000 delegates. First up was the World Meeting on Pharmaceutics, Biopharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology, which was attracted by 1,300 people. This was followed by two events during April: the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ECCMID), which was be attended by more than 8,000 specialists; and the European Society of Endocrine Surgeons, which drew around 300 professionals.

It is estimate that these three event alone have brought in around 12.5 million euros to Barcelona through spending on both accommodation and meals.

Referring to the April conferences, Félix Martínez, the general manager of the CCIB, said: “The decision to hold these two events here is evidence of the excellent positioning of the complex, and by extension Barcelona as a destination for large technical conferences.”

Medical and pharmaceutical sector meetings represent 31% of the more than 330 events hosted by the CCIB since it opened at the end of 2004. Recently, it held the DIA Euromeeting, an event attended by more than 3.000 pharmaceutical specialists, while in May, it will host this year’s Congress of the European Association for Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (EuroPCR), which is expecting 12,000 delegates.

Meanwhile, in the coming months CCIB will be the venue for the World Congress on Gastrointestinal Cancer (GI Cancer), with more than 2,500 attendees, as well as the Meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology, which will attract more than 5,000 experts.
