The USA topped a recent list of nations across the globe in terms of the strength of their international brands, with Germany entering the top 10 for the first time.
The US climbed to pole position with the spread of goodwill brought about by the election of Barack Obama. Meanwhile, Canada strengthened its position in second spot thanks to its strong diverse business and tourism offerings, backed by a solid marketing effort.
The Country Brands Top 10, compiled by FutureBrands, was dominated by the major well-known nations, indicating a focus on the familiar in the face of the recession.
Commenting on the importance of the index, Sandra Chipchase, president of the Association of Australian Convention Bureaux, whose came an impressive third in the list, said: “The Country Brand Index has become a critical tool in lobbying politicians and making marketing decisions.”
Meanwhile, Lutz P Vogt, managing director of the German Convention Bureau, was delighted with his country’s entry into the top 10, calling it "an excellent result”.
“It confirms the performance of the German meetings and conventions industry,” he said. “Germany ranks top exactly in the categories that are important for meetings and events: number one in the Ease of Travel and Standard of Living categories. A good business climate, high per-capita gross domestic product and cutting-edge infrastructure also played a major role."
